The Streets Division maintains over fourteen miles of Deadwood roadways and alleys along with multiple City parking lots covering nearly twenty acres in size. This division also maintains the city signage system, stormwater collection system, lighting and traffic signal systems, and works hand in hand with the other two divisions of Public Works.

When can I expect my street to be cleaned after a snow storm?
Deadwood has a policy to facilitate the removal of snow from the streets and parking lots of Deadwood. The goal is to open the streets to traffic in a timely manner. Fire lanes and parking lots are maintained throughout the snow events to provide residents and visitors parking. After snow events, crews begin to clean roadways from curb to curb and haul the snow to a central location to utilize the snow for a special event. Under optimum conditions, your street will be cleared within four days regardless of where you live.
How often are streets swept?
As soon as the weather permits, the streets are cleared of winter’s salt and sand. During the summer months, the streets are swept on a schedule that is designed to reduce the quantity of fugitive dust stirred up by traffic. Obviously, the downtown area is maintained at a level higher than residential areas which have less travel.
How do you determine the need to resurface a street?
The streets are scheduled for resurfacing as part of the City of Deadwood Capital Improvement Plan. A priority schedule, which attempts to determine the streets with the greatest need based on condition, is used to set the following year’s schedule.
Why is it important not to dump motor oil and chemicals into the storm sewer?
The storm sewers directly discharge into the Whitewood Creek which is classified as a cold water permanent fishery. Chemicals can severely impact the ecological health of the stream. By properly disposing of your oil and chemicals, you assist in protecting the city’s natural resources.
