The Deadwood Historic Preservation Office is a department within the City of Deadwood governmental structure. It was created in 1989 as a result of authorization of legalized gaming in Deadwood. The net municipal proceeds from gaming fund historic preservation within Deadwood’s National Historic Landmark District.

The Historic Preservation Office works with property owners, city departments, organizational and agency partners, as well as the general public to preserve, promote and protect Deadwood’s historic resources along with its rich and unique past. The office is also is the steward of the municipal archival and archaeological laboratories and repositories. In addition, the office manages a variety of incentives through grant and loan programs, works with partner organizations to promote Deadwood colorful history, is heavily involved with community planning and public outreach as well as offers technical assistance for preservation and revitalization matters throughout Deadwood.

Preservation staff researches and prepares staff reports and reviews building permit applications for any changes to the exterior of a property within the historic districts. These reports and recommendation are then shared with the Deadwood Historic Preservation and Historic District Commissions to ensure the changes or alterations are within the authorized and adopted guidelines.
