City of Deadwood Archives - Mission Statement

The mission of the City of Deadwood Archives is to acquire, determine significance, interpret, preserve, and make available municipal and county records as well as rare and unique collections that support ongoing historic preservation efforts in Deadwood, South Dakota.

 

The City Archives is part of the Department of Historic Preservation under the guidance of the Historic Preservation Officer and the Historic Preservation Commission.  In 1992, an archival repository was created at the Deadwood City Hall, located at 102-108 Sherman Street to retain and preserve municipal and county records as well as rare and unique collections.

 

Today the City Archives serves as an archival repository, research center, educational facility, and archaeological repository. Under the mission statement the City Archives will preserve and make accessible permanent municipal and county records, photographs, audio/visual collections, three-dimensional objects, archaeological specimens and other cultural heritage materials that relate to the research and educational endeavors of the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission.

The purpose of the City of Deadwood Archives a Department of the Historic Preservation Office is to collect and preserve the activities of its municipal government, community, and county for perpetuity.  The Archives identifies, collects, preserves and makes available historical records encompassing Deadwood and county residents, organizations, businesses, and related groups from the 1870s to present.
