Historic Preservation Commission Members
This seven-member commission is appointed by the City Commission and administers the historic rules and regulations within Deadwood’s historic districts. The Historic Preservation Commission review requests for historic preservation grant and loan programs, activities requiring a building permits for exterior changes or alterations, new construction, grading or demolition permits and provides budgetary oversight of funds generated by limited stakes gaming in Deadwood.

Anita Knipper is originally from Moline, IL, but fell in love with Deadwood and the Black Hills while working in Gillette, WY, for a summer during college. She vowed to move to the Black Hills when she retired. So, in 2020, she relocated to Deadwood and has been integrating herself into the community. She is a certified firefighter and Secretary/Treasurer for the Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department. She is also a member of the Lead-Deadwood Area Lions Club and Deadwood Neighborhood Council. Anita is excited to work with the Historic Preservation Commission to continue to protect and promote historic Deadwood.

Jesse Allen was born in Deadwood, SD and has family ties to the city going back to the early days of Deadwood. He has a passion for Deadwood’s rich history and has seen the town grow and change over the years. He is very involved with many different boards including Deadwood Alive, Broken Boot Gold Mine, and the Deadwood Jam. Jesse works at the Deadwood Mountain Grand bringing entertainment and events to the community.

Bobby is originally from Fargo, ND but after a 30-year radio career took him from Fargo, to various small market radio stations including Vail, Colorado, Cody, Wyoming, and landed in Rapid City in 1998. One major highlight of becoming a Black Hills resident was being involved in many events in Deadwood, including emceeing and volunteering. In 2019 he became the executive director of Outlaw Square. Bobby met his wonderful partner, got married and lives in a beautiful 1903 Victorian home on Charles Street. Bobby is a part of the Deadwood Alive Board, and still emcees many of Deadwood's major events. He looks forward to being a part of the historic preservation commission in helping promote and protect Deadwood's valuable history.

Molly Brown has been a resident of Deadwood since 2009 and loves the community of Deadwood and the rich history it was founded on. She is a former Main St. business owner and on the Executive Committee of Lead-Deadwood Economic Development. She currently works for GenPro Energy Solutions where she develops renewable energy projects throughout the Great Plains and Mountain West regions. Residing in the Historic Smith Apartment building in the Presidential Neighborhood, Molly can often be found volunteering or working for many of Deadwood's famous events.

Lexi has called the Lead-Deadwood area home for over 25 years and is proud to be raising her kids, sixth generation residents, in the community. She holds a bachelor's degree in history and political science and a master's degree in public administration. After completing undergraduate studies, Lexi and her husband set the intention to return to Deadwood for their deep appreciation for the community, residents, and its rich historical heritage. As a community leader, Lexi is involved in several local and state organizations. In addition to the historic preservation commission, she serves on the Lead-Deadwood School Board, the Lead-Deadwood Youth Football and Cheer Board, the Lawrence County Coalition Board, Associated School Boards of South Dakota, and the South Dakota Public Funds Investment Trust Board and serves as a curriculum committee member for National American University. Through her expertise and volunteer services, Lexi remains committed to preserving the area's history, supporting education, and strengthening the community for future generations.

Bev Posey is a former Hardware Service Technician / Service Planner retired after a 30-year career with IBM. Originally from Connecticut but moved here from Rochester, Minnesota in 2001. She and her husband Jim live in a restored Victorian in the Presidential Neighborhood. Bev regularly attends all Deadwood’s public meetings held by the City Commission and is an active member of the Main Street Initiative. She completed seven years as an HP Commissioner, serving as Chair for two years. This is a third term on the Commission commencing after a one year wait. Historic Preservation continues to be her passion.

Originally from Oak Harbor, WA, Diana and her husband Tony, live in a 1904 Colonial Revival home. As a 10 year anniversary treasure, they found the house online and knew they needed to get to the Black Hills! Diana moved to Deadwood in 2017 while waiting for her husband to retire from the Navy in 2018. Diana retired from her nursing career and enjoy working at local businesses and is a member of the Economic Restructuring and Promotion Committees.
